Celebrating 40 Years of Telguard

From landlines to cellular communication, Telguard has evolved with changing technology.
In the early 1980s, the personal and commercial security landscape looked awfully different from what we take for granted today. While we might get nostalgic thinking of rotary dialing or busy signals with the landlines inside our homes, those same wires were once the lifeline for alarm systems, and a simple snip was all it took to sever a home or business from help. It was that false sense of security – that misguided belief that a home or business was safe when in reality it was just a $2 pair of wire cutters away from being vulnerable – that inspired Telguard founder William De Nicolo to take a new approach.

Melody Parham, Telguard’s Director of Sales, has heard variations of this origin story many times over her 25+ years with the company. “There are stories about phone lines being cut, homes being broken into, people who thought they were secure and weren’t. That’s really why a product like ours was created 40 years ago.”

The founding idea is rooted in something deeply human: everyone deserves that feeling of safety that a reliable security system can provide. That simple ethos has been Telguard’s north star for four decades and counting.
How an Optional Add-On Became an Essential Lifeline

When Telguard opened its doors in 1986, cellular communicators weren’t the standard; they were an upgrade or a luxury.

“When the business started, cellular communicators were just an option,” recalls President George Brody.

“Everything security providers offered was landline-driven. We’ve helped transform this industry to where cellular is the critical path for security and life-safety communications.”

While that paradigm shift was Telguard’s mission from Day 1, it didn’t happen overnight. It grew out of the company’s early willingness to experiment – to try things before they were common, or even comfortable.

Parham vividly remembers those early days of cellular communications.

“When I first started, we were using something called the AMPS cellular product,” she noted. “There was so much equipment required that people literally carried around a bag for their phone. The technology has shifted tremendously from there.”

That willingness to change, and to help customers change with them, became a defining part of the company’s identity.
Customer Service With a Human Touch
Through every shift in the industry, Telguard has earned a reputation for something increasingly rare: actual human support. Telguard has always insisted on live, person-to-person phone support, an intentional choice rooted in empathy.

“We want to hear firsthand what our customers need,” Parham says. “And they’ve come to expect that from us.”

That personal touch shows up in unexpected moments: an installer calling from the field knowing that the support team will not only be well-versed on Telguard’s products, but equally knowledgeable about the alarm panel itself as well, or a dealer transitioning hundreds of accounts at once who knows Telguard’s service team will make a potentially arduous process simple and seamless.

It’s why the company has won numerous awards for its customer service, but the recognition itself isn’t what Telguard is after. What matters are the personal connections the company forges with its customers, and how that in and of itself is such a key element in giving the customer that sense of safety and security they seek.
A Culture Built on People, Not Products

Ask anyone at Telguard what has truly powered the company’s longevity, and you’ll hear the same thing: the people.

“Our people make the business,” Brody says simply. “We have a team that works together extremely well.”

Telguard is a place where careers regularly stretch not for years, but decades. Parham just celebrated her 25th anniversary, and she’s far from an outlier. Many of her teammates have 10, 15, or even 20-plus years under their belts. That kind of stability speaks to the culture Telguard leaders have carefully crafted over the years.

This pattern of longevity is largely due to Telguard’s culture of support, transparency, and mutual respect – an environment where everyone is challenged to grow and then provided with the tools to do so.

Brody notes that ongoing training isn’t a formality; it’s part of how Telguard invests in itself.

“Good training, opportunity for advancement, and a professional environment where we work together – that’s what keeps people here,” he says.

Newer employees feel that culture immediately. Brooks Anderson, who joined the company just over a year ago as a Regional Sales Representative, was surprised by how accessible leadership was. “Top to bottom, the company is flexible,” he says. “You have instant access to executives, and everyone is very transparent.”

It didn’t take him long to understand why people stay.

A Reputation for Reliability

Ask veteran Firmware Engineer Gary Russo what makes Telguard distinct, and his answer is unequivocal: “Reliability. It just works.”

Russo has spent more than two decades ensuring that “it just works” is a brand promise Telguard’s customers can rely on. As Russo reminisced about Telguard’s technical evolution from early device messaging protocols to the integration of IP communications and the internal architecture that powers today’s products, a common theme quickly emerged: building something dependable enough for the moments when it matters most."

“I don’t want a problem I can’t fix,” Russo says. “I want it to work when it leaves the door.”

That mindset permeates the entire company. Parham hears the results of that commitment from customers on a regular basis.

Darrell McKinney, the owner of Prime City Developers and a long-time Telguard customer, echoes this theme of reliability. “Every situation out there – anything that I’ve run into during the 40 years that I’ve been doing this – these Telguard products are going to solve that problem.”
Ongoing Innovation

While reaching 40 years is an achievement to be celebrated for any company, Telguard is much more focused on looking ahead rather than reminiscing. In the last year alone, the company launched what Parham calls “the most successful product launch we’ve ever had” – its patent-pending multi-carrier solution – and the entire team is bullish on how transformative this innovation will be.

Telguard’s multi-carrier alarm communicators are the first of their kind to hit the market. The devices can automatically select the best available carrier based on signal strength and switch carriers if conditions change, ensuring the device operates with the strongest and most reliable signal at all times.

Anderson sees the multi-carrier communicators as a symbol of Telguard’s broader momentum as a company. “We’re 40 years old and still releasing first-of-its-kind technology,” he says. “That gives the company a solid foundation heading into the future.”

Brody, too, sees enormous opportunity – both in the U.S. and globally. “Wireless technology is always advancing, and staying at the forefront of those changes will continue to generate tremendous opportunities,” he says. “We have great customers, great technologies, and opportunities for more impactful innovation ahead.”

40 Years of Safety

As Telguard celebrates 40 years of business, the company is still defined by the same simple belief that sparked its creation decades ago: people deserve to feel safe. The technology may be more advanced, the team larger, and the product line and customer base broader, but the ethos remains the same.

When asked what keeps him passionate about continuing to build innovative products this far into his Telguard career, Russo summed it up nicely: “It’s the utility of what we do that keeps me passionate. We build products that help people and keep them safe.”
