Challenge:

Every project, whether it be a new install or a takeover projects, comes complete with its own set of technical challenges. But the ones inherent to a takeover project can be particularly complex. There are certain issues that systems integrators and installers must address when taking over a project already in progress. The age and overall working condition of the existing system must be assessed to determine if any replacement parts are needed. Sensors also need to be checked to determine if they’re working properly, and wiring needs to be examined to see if it’s compromised in any way.

The coverage of the original system must be checked to see if it’s delivering the maximum benefit to ensure property and life safety. Many determinations need to be made. For example, does the current install meet local code requirements? What is the battery backup expectancy? How easily is the system accessed by the public, employees, etc., and how easily could the system and its components be damaged, whether intentionally or accidentally? Is the system’s self-test and communication path enabled, and at what frequency, and how is the self-test monitored?

When taking over an existing project, it’s important to keep in mind that you’ll likely need to use new account information to identify the account, as well as possibly work with a monitoring center that is new to the panel. This can be a big challenge because the previous company handling the service will not unlock the panel so you can change the settings. The ability to redirect where the alarm data goes without having to change the system or needing full access to panel programming, is crucial.
